The culmination of the visit of the Maltese delegation from the Ministry for the Interior, Security and Work was reached in a bilateral meeting between the Libyan Prime Minister Abdul Hamid al-Dbeibeh and the Minister for the Interior, the Safety and Work Byron Camilleri. During this meeting the progress being made in the work between the two countries in various fields related to law enforcement and security, the training exercises for the Libyan law enforcement forces was discussed. and new areas of cooperation between the authorities of the two countries.
The Libyan Prime Minister Abdul Hamid al-Dbeibeh had words of special thanks for Malta, particularly for the help given to the Libyan people by the Department of Civil Protection and the Armed Forces of Malta after the floods that affected Derna in September 2023.
Minister Byron Camilleri also met with the Libyan Interior Minister Emad Trabelsi where other concrete measures were discussed as to how Malta can continue to assist the exercise of developing the capacities of the Libyan law enforcement forces. The two sides talked about different methods of strengthening the work between the authorities of the two countries on maintaining order in the region, including law enforcement at sea. Both sides also talked about irregular immigration and the work of the Libyan authorities on land and sea to curb organized crime and prevent loss of life.
Minister Camilleri also visited the Police academy in Tajoura where he closely followed the results of the training provided by officers from the Armed Forces of Malta. He thanked the Maltese officers who provided the training in Libya and presented certificates to the Libyan officers who completed the training successfully. Similar training was given to other Libyan officials involved in air and sea rescue.
The Maltese delegation also met with General Mohammed Al-Haddad, the Commander of the Libyan Army, together with the heads of the military units that fall under him. Both sides talked about how Malta can continue to contribute to strengthening the human resources of the Libyan security forces and the fight against international crime in the Mediterranean.
At the end of the visit, Minister Camilleri thanked the Government and the Libyan authorities for their continued cooperation and reiterated Malta’s commitment to strengthen this cooperation and gain the support of more European countries. He noted the progress made by the Libyan authorities in consolidating the security authorities and wished that the European Union and Libya work more together in order to strengthen this progress.
“No one should doubt that the situation and security in Libya have a direct impact on the center of the Mediterranean and the southern part of Europe. The collaboration between Libya and neighboring countries such as Malta translates into the protection of Maltese and Libyan citizens and their interests in both countries,” said Minister Camilleri.
