In a news conference linked to the measures of Budget 2024, the Parliamentary Secretary for Social Dialogue Andy Ellul announced that in the coming time the law will be launched to regulate temping agencies. Andy Ellul explained that through this legislative framework a number of criteria will be introduced that one must meet to be able to operate in this field.
Parliamentary Secretary Ellul also explained that a system of licenses will be introduced for these agencies so that they can operate and bring workers from outside the European Union. The ultimate goal would be for quality workers to come to our country to work in sectors where there is a real need for them. Parliamentary Secretary Ellul also mentioned the work being done to introduce the concept of “equal pay for work of equal value” for the workers of these agencies, as well as for changes in the law so that every worker of the private sector starts receiving his salary in a bank account, like the public service and public sector workers.
“Next year will continue the largest financial allocation in order to further strengthen the social dialogue between the government, the employers, and the representatives of the workers, because we believe in the importance of a strong social dialogue that it leads to the government making decisions with recommendations that everyone benefits from”, said Parliamentary Secretary Andy Ellul. “Therefore a new entity will be established which will strengthen the public consultation process in our country. This entity will be working hand in hand with the MCESD and will serve as a support for the social partners”, repeated Andy Ellul.
The parliamentary secretary also said that workers’ rights are very close to the heart of this government and the Department of Industrial Relations and Employment is a catalyst in this move so that rights are increased for all workers and therefore a review of the Work Regulation Orders (WROs) was carried out which will lead to certain anomalies in the existing law being addressed and therefore regulating and harmonizing the various sectors.
