The Ministry for Justice has today issued a public call in the Government gazette for the addition of 5 new Magistrates, which include 4 additional magistrates and another Magistrate to fill the position of a Magistrate who will be appointed Judge.

This step, which was taken in discussion with the Chief Justice Mark Chetcuti, will continue to strengthen the body of the judiciary and this in accordance with the commitment in the electoral manifesto ‘Malta Flimkien’, which today is the plan of ‘ work of the Government. This increase in the body of the judiciary is being done with the intention of starting the first part of the reform in the field of magisterial inquiries. This is because with the addition of 4 additional Magistrates, the Chief Justice will be in a position to assign 4 Magistrates specifically dedicated to magisterial inquiries.

The Minister for Justice Jonathan Attard stressed that this decision and this investment will strengthen the basis for further reforms in the sector, with the ultimate aim being to continue walking towards a more efficient justice. He reiterated that this will be the first phase of a holistic reform where the next step will be to issue the legislative and administrative reform for public consultation. This increase, which follows the recent call of 3 new Judges, will continue to strengthen the body of the judiciary which is already the largest one in the history of our Courts. This will also lead to an increase in the amount of judges compared to the population, as calculated in the international evaluations of the judicial systems.
