Minister for Senior Citizens and Active Ageing Michael Farrugia said that the government believes in the abilities of senior citizens who wish to remain active. In view of this, senior citizens will soon have the opportunity to engage in a programme of physical activities as a means to lead a healthier lifestyle.
The minister announced this during the signing of an agreement between SportsAdultz, a private company, and the Active Ageing and Community Care directorate. According to the agreement, a specifically designed sports programme will be offered to senior citizens at day centres within the community.
Minister Michael Farrugia said that these organised activities will help senior citizens stay healthy, both physically and mentally. They are also intended to reduce stress as well as improve their self-confidence and abilities. The sports programme includes various exercises and team-building activities.
Minister Michael Farrugia explained that the initiative consists of 12 sessions, held once a week, with a total of 36 sessions spread over a year.
Sessions will start as from this October at the Żurrieq, Birkirkara and Mellieħa day centres, and will eventually be made available in more localities.
During the 12-week programme, participants will have the opportunity to practice six types of sport disciplines – two sessions for every discipline. Training will be led by a qualified coach and an assistant.
All necessary equipment will be provided by SportsAdultz.
