Government has launched a TV Production and Content Fund, a new scheme aimed at fostering and assisting the development and production of content created specifically for TV and online platforms. This will be done through an investment of €800,000 which will be used to develop and produce high-quality, creatively ambitious, and commercially viable content.

The fund was launched during a press conference in Castille addressed by Minister within the Office of the Prime Minister Carmelo Abela, during which it was explained that through this fund it is to be ensured that the developed content is attractive to local and foreign audiences, but above all, helps local production houses to grow and create content that is financially feasible and produces a return for them.

For production companies or households to be eligible for this scheme, they must produce a film, mini-series, documentary, reality programme, game show, or children’s/young people’s programme. Those eligible will be able to recover up to 20% of their costs up to a maximum of €75,000.

Eligible productions need to premiere by the end of December, and at least 75% of the production costs must be incurred in Malta. The selection of productions will be carried out by an independent panel which will assess the applications on the basis of three aspects: the relevance of production (15 points), production quality (35 points) and the commercial viability and sustainability of the project (50 points). Productions must accumulate at least 65 points in order to be eligible for funding.

Minister Carmelo Abela said that with this fund, producers and production houses are being encouraged to broaden their horizons, explore international opportunities, engage in innovative practices, and introduce innovation in the sector. “Through today’s launch, this government is reconfirming its commitment to this industry and to the creative Maltese talent. We must continue to support the growth and development of this industry and of the people working in it. One will always be able to get the support needed from this government”, stated Minister Abela.
