Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Capital Projects Ian Borg announced that works on the €18 million Kirkop Tunnels and Airport Intersection Project (KTAIP) are well underway as project contractors have already excavated 30% of this underpass and its approach ramps.
In April, Infrastructure Malta started excavating the project’s new 200-metre roundabout underpass and its two 120-metre approach ramps. This underpass will create a direct, safer link between the southbound and northbound carriageways of L-Avjazzjoni Avenue and Ħal Far Road.
Minister Ian Borg said, that “The safety of the people is always a priority for this government. With this project we will be reducing both travelling time since traffic will be reduced, as well as the risk of accidents. In addition, it is also worth mentioning that Infrastructure Malta is currently also preparing to start the Luqa Junction Project, a project which will take place not far from here but along the same route”.
Together, these two projects will be reducing travel time by up to 74% along this route.
“We will thus be making another step forward towards this government’s vision for greener infrastructure and a cleaner environment through less traffic which automatically results in lower emissions and even the adoption of cleaner and more sustainable transport through facilities such as more footpaths, better public transport and more safe cycle paths, not only in these two projects but also in other projects across our country. ”
The Kirkop Tunnels and Airport Intersection Project (KTAIP) will also overhaul the area’s underground services networks, including 10 kilometres of new electricity cables, internet and other telecommunication cable ducts, water mains, sewers and stormwater pipelines. Approximately 20% of these networks are ready.
