The Trelleborg operation will halve carbon emissions by 2025
During a visit to the Trelleborg Sealing Solutions factory, in the industrial area of Ħal Far, Prime Minister Robert Abela was given an explanation of the investment made in the last five years and of the planned further investment plan for the future.
In fact, this company will be expanding its production space by a total of 6,355 square meters, after making an investment of € 15 million in the last five years.
This company produces 25 million O-Ring per week which are subsequently exported to overseas markets.
Originally based in Marsa, Trelleborg is celebrating its 60th anniversary in Malta. Initially it employed 60 people, while today it employs more than 500 people and operates from both Ħal Far and Marsa.
“This government has shown time and time again that it believes in the future of manufacturing in our country. This sector is a key pillar of our economy and we must ensure that it continues to grow. Once again, it has shown great resilience during 2020 – a year that has seen one of the biggest economic crises due to the pandemic, “said Dr Abela.
Prime Minister Abela said that, with a total of € 993 million, in 2020 the manufacturing sector had slightly higher added value than in 2019, while in the rest of Europe the added value of manufacturing decreased by 6.5%. While the number of workers in the manufacturing sector has decreased across Europe, an increase has been recorded in Malta.
In this context, the Prime Minister also referred to the policy adopted by the Maltese government when it chose never to go for lockdown and consequently allowed manufacturing operators to continue working and exporting their product to their respective markets.
“We genuinely believe that companies such as Trelleborg, which have been operating in Malta for decades and have done so much to change the lives of the surrounding community, deserve all forms of help,” said the Prime Minister.
Dr Abela also emphasized new production lines that will focus on sustainable technology in the coming years.
“As part of our economic strategy, we want the industries in our country to operate and roam in new areas by investing more in industrial research and technological and sustainable development. Today’s investment is a perfect example of an industry that is regenerating its operations with sophisticated machinery and new technology, “said the Prime Minister.
Prime Minister Robert Abela concluded his speech with an ambitious vision for the future.
“By the end of this legislature, I am optimistic that for the first time in our history we will have a manufacturing sector that creates an annual turnover of more than € 1 billion. That is our ambition. “
Trelleborg Sealing Solutions Managing Director Martin Hignett said that on this symbolic anniversary it is fitting to acknowledge the work done by the employees who have contributed during these 60 years of work in ‘Malta.
The President of Global Operations Elastomers, Trelleborg Sealing Solutions, Gordon Micallef stated that in a global company such as Trelleborg, the opportunities to be seen are limitless. Here he remarked on his start in this company almost 30 years ago. Mr Micallef also said Trelleborg has launched an ambitious new target that will see the group halve its carbon emissions by 2025.
Accompanying the Prime Minister during the visit were the Minister for the Economy and Industry Silvio Schembri and the Minister for Energy, Enterprise and Sustainable Development Miriam Dalli.
