Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Capital Projects Ian Borg said, “As we are currently working for the regeneration of Senglea, works are also being carried out here on the famous Birgu square. Our goal is to restore Cottonera to its prestigious state through the highest quality work possible. This government believes and holds the heritage of our country as one of its highest priorities, and is aware of the significant historical importance that the Cottonera possesses. Therefore, we are committed to not only maintain that status, but to also work to raise it higher so that the residents of Cottonera truly get what they deserve.”
Before the works are carried out in Victory Square, which is Vittoriosa’s square, Infrastructure Malta will rebuild four residential streets next to it, as well as some which lead into it.
“We would like to point out that, so far, more than 500 roads have been built around our country as part of the €700 million investment. The results are visible. It is true, we are not there yet, but our work continues in order to reach the final goal,” Minister Ian Borg added.
Minister for Tourism and Consumer Protection Clayton Bartolo remarked that nowadays the Cottonera region has become one of the main contributors to Maltese and Gozitan tourism.
“Before the pandemic reached our shores, 40% of the tourists who came to our country in one way or another visited this area. Our aim is to continue raising these numbers. Therefore, it is of the outmost importance to continue investing both in Vittoriosa and the surrounding localities,” Minister Clayton Bartolo highlighted.
Minister Bartolo stressed that the ultimate goal of this project is to improve accessibility for those who frequent this square through the introduction of a pedestrian area.
“We will give Vittoriosa Square back to the people, with a public space which is more open to the Maltese and tourists,” Minister Bartolo concluded.
With regards to works, it is planned that La Vallette Street will be built first and, afterwards, the second part of Triq il-Palazz l-Antik tal-Gvernatur, Triq San Filippu and Triq il-Miratur will follow.
In the locality of Vittoriosa, Infrastructure Malta has already rebuilt the first part of Triq il-Palazz l-Antik tal-Gvernatur, Triq iċ-Ċentinarju tal-Parroċċa and Triq San Dwardu.
The works will include underground services and pavements so that the foundations are strengthened, and the roads will be resurfaced. When these four roads are completed, Infrastructure Malta will then carry out the project in Vittoriosa Square, which will be carried out in collaboration with the Ministry for Tourism and Consumer Protection. The agency will carry out some services and complete the road so that it can then be paved.
