An administrative building belonging to Saudi oil giant Aramco was damaged in Riyadh on Sunday in an attack claimed by Yemen’s Houthi movement, according to CNN.

The incident affected a property in the King Abdullah Financial District after Saudi Civil Defence issued an early warning of a potential threat to the capital. Saudi authorities said falling shrapnel caused minor damage and reported no injuries or deaths.

Footage verified by CNN showed broken windows and damage to several floors. The images offered a visible indication of the impact, although the Saudi Energy Ministry’s account described the damage as limited.

The Houthis said the Riyadh building was among several Aramco targets attacked. Saudi authorities had not initially commented on the movement’s additional claims, leaving the full extent of the operation unclear.

The Saudi-led coalition said air defences intercepted and destroyed two cruise missiles in Riyadh and the southern region, as well as two ballistic missiles launched towards the capital.

The attack followed Saudi airstrikes near Sanaa that killed at least 33 people, including women and children, according to Yemen’s Houthi-run health ministry. A senior Houthi official had threatened retaliation over those strikes.

Hostilities between Saudi Arabia and the Iran-backed movement resumed in July, ending a prolonged period of reduced fighting following a UN-brokered ceasefire in 2022.

CNN reported that the Houthis have used missiles and drones against Saudi targets over recent months. The movement says its attacks will continue while Saudi airstrikes and restrictions on Houthi-controlled territory remain in place.

The incident adds to the security pressures facing Saudi Arabia, whose air defences must protect cities, airports and energy installations across a large territory.

The latest accounts concerned an administrative building. They did not establish a disruption to Aramco’s oil production. Responsibility for additional alleged attacks and their consequences remained subject to confirmation.
