Education and Sport Minister Byron Camilleri inaugurated the Mediterranean College of Sport’s primary school on Friday, 6 November. The school has 93 pupils and combines classroom lessons with a daily sports programme.
Pupils take part in 45-minute sessions in disciplines including gymnastics, swimming and athletics. College chief executive Charlo Bonnici said the primary programme gives children time to try several sports before choosing a discipline to pursue at secondary level. He said pupils can then continue their studies through the college’s secondary and sixth-form programmes.
The primary school began operating last year with two classes and added two more this year. Bonnici said he expects the primary school to be fully established next school year. The college opened in 2024 with secondary and sixth-form programmes. It now has more than 360 students across all levels and expects enrolment to reach about 450 next school year.
Head of school Mariuccia Fenech said the college gives equal weight to academics and sport. She said the school wants that combination to help pupils develop the resilience to face challenges as they grow older.
Camilleri said sport complements classroom learning by teaching discipline, respect, teamwork and perseverance. He credited Vassallo Group’s investment with widening the options available to families and thanked teachers and coaches for their work with pupils.
Camilleri toured the primary classrooms, sports facilities and Performance Science Centre. He also met pupils and staff during the visit. The inauguration was marked by the unveiling of a commemorative plaque.
