Chris Fearne Re-Elected Chair of Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group for Another Two Years

Malta's Minister for Foreign and European Affairs, Chris Fearne, has been re-elected chair of the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG) for a further two-year term.

The decision was taken by CMAG member countries during Commonwealth meetings held in Antigua and Barbuda, extending Malta's leadership role within the group.

Malta to Continue Leading Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group

CMAG is responsible for promoting and upholding the Commonwealth's fundamental principles, including democracy, the rule of law, human rights and good governance.

Minister Fearne's re-election means that Malta will continue to chair the group as it addresses challenges affecting democratic institutions and constitutional principles across Commonwealth member states.

Fearne Calls for Greater Focus on Preventing Democratic Crises

Following his re-election, Minister Fearne emphasised the need for the Commonwealth to take a more active role in protecting democratic values, particularly as institutions around the world face growing pressures.

He argued that CMAG should not limit its work to responding when crises emerge, but should also prioritise early engagement, dialogue and cooperation to help prevent problems from escalating.

The Minister highlighted the importance of sustained collaboration among Commonwealth countries to strengthen democratic institutions and support good governance.

Democracy and Transparency Discussed During CHOGM

During the week of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), Minister Fearne also participated in discussions on safeguarding democracy alongside parliamentary representatives and members of civil society.

He stressed the importance of strong democratic institutions, transparent governance and ensuring that citizens have a meaningful voice in decisions affecting their lives.

The discussions formed part of wider Commonwealth efforts to address governance challenges and reinforce shared democratic principles.

Bilateral Meetings to Strengthen Malta's Diplomatic Relations

During his visit to Antigua and Barbuda, Minister Fearne held a series of bilateral meetings with representatives of other Commonwealth countries.

These discussions focused on strengthening Malta's diplomatic relationships and exploring opportunities for further international cooperation.

Malta's continued chairmanship of CMAG provides another platform for the country to participate in Commonwealth discussions on democratic governance, human rights and the rule of law.
