Budget 2027: Over €370 Million for Energy, Water and Environment as Malta Maintains €400 Million in Energy Subsidies
Malta's Budget 2027 will prioritise a more reliable electricity supply, investment in clean energy, stronger water infrastructure and additional open spaces, as the Government seeks to improve families' quality of life while preparing the country for future challenges.
Minister for Energy, the Environment and the Regeneration of the Grand Harbour Miriam Dalli outlined the measures during a press conference held under the Malta Miegħek theme.
The Minister said her Ministry had been allocated more than €370 million in capital investment, the largest capital allocation among ministries, while the Government would continue protecting households and businesses from international energy price fluctuations through a further €400 million in subsidies.
“Our policy is clear; we are protecting families from today's pressures while investing in the infrastructure our country needs for the future. This is the principle behind Malta Miegħek – a country that moves forward and moves its people along with it,” Minister Dalli said.
Strengthening Malta's Electricity Infrastructure
In the energy sector, investment will continue in strengthening the electricity distribution network through additional substations, cables and distribution centres.
The Government will also advance major strategic projects, including the second electricity interconnector, battery energy storage systems and the development of new renewable energy sources.
Support schemes will continue to help families invest in clean energy technologies and improve energy and water efficiency, with the aim of making the environmental transition accessible to more households.
Investment in Water Infrastructure and Wastewater Treatment
Budget 2027 will also support improvements to Malta's water infrastructure, focusing on increasing production capacity, modernising existing systems and strengthening wastewater treatment.
The expansion of the New Water network will continue, encouraging more sustainable use of water resources and reducing pressure on conventional water supplies.
More Open Spaces and Environmental Protection
Environmental investment will focus on modern waste management systems, nature conservation and the creation of additional open spaces for families and communities.
Among the projects highlighted are plans for national parks at Manoel Island, White Rocks and Fort Campbell, forming part of the Government's wider programme to improve public spaces and protect Malta's natural environment.
Improving Families' Quality of Life
Minister Dalli emphasised that the investments were intended to ensure economic growth delivered practical improvements to people's daily lives.
“A country's success is not measured solely by economic growth, but by the extent to which that growth improves people's lives. We are investing in better services and infrastructure, a more attractive environment and a more sustainable future for generations to come,” the Minister concluded.
The Budget measures are intended to combine immediate financial support for families and businesses with longer-term investment in energy security, environmental sustainability and essential infrastructure.
