MCAST Managers Secure Pay Rises and Improved Working Conditions Under New Collective Agreement
Managers at the Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology (MCAST) are set to benefit from salary increases, new allowances and improved working conditions following the signing of a collective agreement between the college and the Malta Union of Teachers (MUT).
The agreement, covering the period from January 2025 to December 2027, was signed at the Ministry for Education and Sport in the presence of Minister Byron Camilleri, senior government officials and representatives of MCAST and MUT.
Salary Improvements and New Allowances
The agreement provides for improvements to managers' financial packages, including new allowances reflecting their responsibilities and contributions to the college's daily operations.
The measures cover managers working across a range of functions, including academic institutes, research, logistics, maintenance, human resources, procurement and administration.
In addition to financial improvements, the agreement introduces measures aimed at modernising working conditions, supporting employee well-being, promoting work-life balance and fostering a more inclusive workplace.
Minister Highlights Investment in Education Workers
Minister for Education and Sport Byron Camilleri described the agreement as another step towards improving conditions for employees working in Malta's education sector.
He noted that it was the second collective agreement signed within five months, reflecting the government's stated commitment to strengthening workers' rights and recognising the contribution of education professionals.
“Today's agreement is a concrete recognition of the work and responsibilities of MCAST managers, who play an important role in ensuring that the College continues to offer quality education and training to our students,” Minister Camilleri said.
The Minister added that investment in education workers also contributes to the quality of the education and training provided to students.
MCAST Principal Welcomes Agreement
MCAST Principal Stephen Vella welcomed the agreement, emphasising the importance of recognising the people who contribute to the college's operations and development.
“In order to continue to offer the highest quality education to our students, we must first and foremost value the people who contribute to the work and development of the College every day,” Vella said.
He described the agreement as another step towards improving conditions for managers and supporting the college's long-term development.
Malta Union of Teachers: Agreement Recognises Managers' Contribution
MUT President Marco Bonnici said the agreement represents an important development for employees responsible for MCAST's administrative and managerial support structures.
He explained that the agreement, which is expected to begin being implemented in the coming weeks, will improve working conditions and financial benefits while recognising the contribution of managers to the institution.
Part of Wider Improvements at MCAST
The agreement follows collective agreements concluded during 2025 for other categories of MCAST employees, including lecturers.
According to the Ministry, the latest agreement reflects continued cooperation between MCAST and MUT to create a fairer, more stable and modern working environment.
The government said these measures form part of its wider efforts to strengthen vocational and technical education in Malta by supporting the professionals responsible for delivering and managing education services.
