Malta Rugby Team to Play Historic 100th International Against Germany on Saturday

Malta's national rugby team will reach a historic milestone on Saturday, 7 November 2026, when it plays its 100th international match against Germany at the Hibernians Stadium in Paola.

The landmark fixture comes during a successful period for Maltese rugby, with the national team securing promotion to the Rugby Europe Trophy for the first time in its history.

Government Pledges Further Investment in Maltese Rugby

Details of the match were announced by Minister for Education and Sport Byron Camilleri, alongside Malta Rugby Football Union (MRFU) President Gerald Strickland, national team coach Phil Pretorius and captain Joe Greaves.

Minister Camilleri praised the commitment of players, coaches, volunteers and officials who have contributed to the sport's development over the years.

“The one hundredth international match is a milestone that should fill us with pride, and at the same time an opportunity to look towards the future of rugby in our country,” Minister Camilleri said.

He reaffirmed the government's support for the MRFU's development plan through 2031, including initiatives to encourage more children and young people to participate in rugby.

The Minister also announced a commitment to improve rugby infrastructure at the Marsa Sports Grounds, with further details expected to be announced in the coming months.

England Rugby World Cup-Winning Captain to Attend

Former England captain Martin Johnson, who led his country to victory at the 2003 Rugby World Cup, is expected to attend the occasion in Malta.

His presence will add an international dimension to the celebrations marking the national team's 100th appearance.

Malta Building on Historic Promotion

Malta earned promotion to the Rugby Europe Trophy following victories over Andorra, Cyprus and Israel, before defeating Austria 39–13 in the play-offs.

The national team subsequently opened its Trophy campaign with an impressive 36–17 victory over Denmark, recovering from a 17-point deficit to secure the win.

Malta currently occupies second place in the standings, according to the information released ahead of Saturday's fixture.

Germany, meanwhile, began its campaign with a commanding 54–7 victory over Lithuania, setting up a demanding test for the Maltese side.

Malta is also scheduled to face the Czech Republic, Sweden and Lithuania during the season.

MRFU Looks Towards Long-Term Growth

MRFU President Gerald Strickland described the milestone as an important moment for the development of Maltese rugby.

“Our dream of reaching the 2031 Rugby World Cup is not just about matches. It depends on sustained investment in our performance programme, facilities, sports tourism and the governance of our sport,” Strickland said.

National team captain Joe Greaves said the 100th international match reflects the progress achieved by Maltese rugby, while coach Phil Pretorius highlighted the unity and pride of the players representing their country.
