Malta to Introduce €235 On-the-Spot Fine for Smoking Cannabis in Public
Malta is set to introduce the €235 fine for smoking cannabis in public places into its On The Spot Fines system, allowing the penalty to be collected immediately from individuals who are not habitually resident in Malta.
The announcement was made by Minister for Home Affairs and Security Glenn Bedingfield during a press conference held under the theme Malta With You.
Minister Bedingfield stressed that smoking cannabis in public remains illegal under Chapter 537 of the Laws of Malta and called for stronger enforcement against those who disregard the law and the people around them.
"Possession of drugs, even in small amounts, is illegal. Smoking cannabis in public places is also illegal and should not be done. We need more enforcement against those who do not respect those around them," the Minister said.
Stronger Enforcement Against Drug Offences
The Minister emphasised that combating drug trafficking requires a collective national effort against those who exploit vulnerable people in society.
At the same time, he highlighted the importance of providing appropriate assistance and support to individuals experiencing drug addiction, including through continued cooperation with non-governmental organisations.

- €37 million for the Correctional Services Agency.
Minister Bedingfield also highlighted an additional €33 million for the Armed Forces of Malta and €16 million for the Police Force, alongside further investment in equipment, training, surveillance and infrastructure.
Government Highlights Reduction in Theft
