Works on 7.2km of New Electricity Cables to Strengthen Gżira-Sliema Network

Works to install a new 11kV electricity cable stretching 4.5 kilometres between Manoel Island in Gżira and the Ferries in Sliema will begin tomorrow, aimed at strengthening the electricity network in the area.

The new cable will have a higher capacity to meet increasing electricity demand in Gżira and Sliema, providing a direct connection from the Manoel Island Distribution Centre to central Sliema.

As part of the same project, Enemalta will also install 2.7 kilometres of new low-voltage cables to reinforce the local distribution network.

The existing cable, which has been in service for several years, is being replaced after accumulating numerous joints along its route, making it more vulnerable to faults.

Enemalta: A Long-Term Investment

Enemalta Executive Chairman Ing. Ryan Fava said the replacement was necessary to improve the reliability of electricity supply in the area.

“This is a section of the network where replacement is the right long-term solution. The new cable will increase our capacity and give us a stronger direct connection into central Sliema, while the installation of new low-voltage cables will further strengthen the low-voltage network in the area,” Fava said.

Traffic Disruptions Expected for Two Months

The works will take place along the seafront and are expected to take approximately two months to complete.

During this period, the bus lane running parallel to the seafront will be closed to allow excavation and cable-laying works. Traffic heading out of Sliema will be reduced to one lane throughout the project.

Enemalta said the investment will help strengthen electricity supply in one of Malta’s most densely populated areas, where demand has increased significantly in recent years.
