Rehabilitation works have been completed along a one-kilometre stretch of Mġarr ix-Xini Valley in Xewkija, Gozo, to improve rainwater management, reduce the risk of flooding and protect the area's natural environment.
The project, carried out during the summer, covered the section between Triq tal-Gruwa and the existing dam.
Gozo Minister Clint Camilleri visited the site following the completion of the works, which included the removal of vegetation from approximately 11,700 square metres and the clearance of around 24,500 cubic metres of accumulated sediment and other material.
Improving Water Flow and Protecting Biodiversity
According to the Ministry for Gozo, the intervention has helped reopen sections of the valley that had become obstructed over time, improving its capacity to collect and channel rainwater.
Particular attention was given to controlling invasive plant species, especially reeds, which can obstruct water flow and compete with indigenous vegetation.
The works also focused on protecting soil, native plants, trees and protected species, while creating better conditions for the regeneration of natural habitats.
Minister Camilleri said Gozo's valleys form an important part of the island's natural heritage and that the project was intended to improve water management while preserving the surrounding landscape and biodiversity.
The ministry said the completed rehabilitation is expected to contribute to reduced flood risks and improved ecological conditions at Mġarr ix-Xini Valley.
