Young people involved in band clubs across Malta and Gozo could benefit from new European opportunities under an initiative being explored by Aġenzija Żgħażagħ in collaboration with youth and band club organisations.

Discussions have begun with the European Youth Card Association (EYCA) and representatives of Malta's band club community on ways to expand access to cultural exchanges, training and youth development programmes.

The initiative was discussed during the Youth Conductors of Change conference, organised by Aġenzija Żgħażagħ in collaboration with the Għaqda Każini tal-Banda.

European Youth Card Initiative Under Discussion

One of the proposals being explored is the introduction of an EYCA x Band Clubs Card, designed to connect young band club members with opportunities available through European programmes.

These include Erasmus+ Youth and the European Solidarity Corps, which support youth participation, international exchanges, volunteering and personal development.

The proposed initiative aims to help young people build new skills, gain cultural experiences and strengthen their involvement in their local communities.

The card remains at the discussion stage, with the organisations involved examining how the collaboration could be developed.

Band Clubs Learn About Funding and Training Opportunities

During the conference, representatives of band clubs and festa organisations also received information about funding schemes and programmes available at both national and European levels.

These included Erasmus+, the European Solidarity Corps and other initiatives intended to support youth participation and organisational development.

Discussions also highlighted the contribution of Malta's traditional village festas and band clubs to community life, particularly their role in encouraging young people to become involved in cultural and voluntary activities.

Minister Highlights the Role of Young Volunteers

Minister for Youth, Wellbeing and the Implementation of the Electoral Programme Omar Farrugia highlighted the importance of young people who dedicate their time to band clubs and local cultural organisations.

He said their participation makes a significant contribution to their communities and stressed the government's intention to provide opportunities that support their wellbeing, personal development and involvement in society.

The minister also emphasised the importance of equipping young people with the tools needed to contribute to the future development of their communities.

Aġenzija Żgħażagħ Engages with Band Clubs Across Malta and Gozo

Maria Borg, the Aġenzija Żgħażagħ manager responsible for the conference, explained that the event provided an opportunity to meet representatives of band clubs from across Malta and Gozo.

She said the agency wanted to listen to their needs while providing guidance on opportunities available through European initiatives, including Eurodesk, Erasmus+ and the European Solidarity Corps.

The discussions are intended to help young people involved in Malta's band club tradition gain wider access to learning, cultural and international experiences while continuing to play an active role in their communities.
