A former quarry in Mqabba has been transformed into a new 7,000-square-metre public park, offering families, children and pet owners a green recreational space following an investment of more than €2 million, co-financed by European funds.
Park tal-Mitħna, located on the border between Mqabba and Qrendi, was officially inaugurated by Minister Miriam Dalli and Minister Keith Azzopardi Tanti during an event attended by residents, local organisations and representatives of neighbouring local councils.
The site, which previously served as a quarry, had accumulated approximately 20,000 cubic metres of construction waste over the years. It has now been regenerated into an accessible open space designed to encourage outdoor recreation and bring residents closer to nature.
New Facilities for Families and Children
The park includes natural play areas for children, cycling paths, a table tennis area, a bug and bee hotel, and sanitary facilities.
A dedicated dog park has also been developed, with separate areas for smaller and larger dogs, allowing pets to exercise and play in a suitable environment.
The new facilities are intended to provide opportunities for families to spend quality time together through recreation, physical activity and relaxation.
300 Trees and More Than 3,200 Shrubs Planted
Environmental regeneration formed a central part of the project. Around 300 trees and more than 3,200 shrubs have been planted across the site, replacing the former quarry landscape with green spaces.
A rainwater reservoir has also been constructed to collect water for reuse in irrigating the park, supporting more sustainable maintenance.
Government Reaffirms Commitment to Open Spaces
Minister Miriam Dalli described Park tal-Mitħna as another step towards providing communities with more accessible recreational areas.
“Park tal-Mitħna is another example of how we are delivering on our promise to create more open spaces for families, where children can play, young people can stay active, and residents can find somewhere to relax and enjoy their surroundings.”
Minister Dalli said the government would continue investing in public open spaces, highlighting the additional commitments announced in Budget 2027.
She emphasised that investment in the environment also represents investment in Maltese and Gozitan families, communities and future generations.
More Than €2 Million Investment Co-Financed by European Funds
Minister Keith Azzopardi Tanti highlighted the role of European funding in transforming the former quarry into a community asset.
“Through an investment of more than €2 million, co-financed by European funds, we are giving this area in Mqabba a new lease of life and bringing nature closer to people.”
He added that European funds would continue to be directed towards projects that address community needs and improve the environment for future generations.
Encouraging Healthier and More Active Lifestyles
Project Green Chief Operations Officer Beverley Costa said the park had been designed to encourage physical activity and healthier lifestyles while offering families a welcoming environment.
“Through this project, we have combined environmental protection with recreation to create a space that encourages people to spend more time outdoors and closer to nature.”
Park tal-Mitħna now provides residents of Mqabba, Qrendi and surrounding communities with a new recreational destination, turning a formerly degraded site into a public green space.
