In the Auberge de Castille, during a meeting with the Executive Vice-President of the European Commission responsible for Cohesion and Reforms, Raffaele Fitto, Prime Minister Robert Abela stated that for Malta, the European Union’s cohesion policy is essential to support investment in infrastructure, skills development, economic diversification and social inclusion. This while helping to strengthen our country’s resilience in the face of ever-growing economic and geopolitical challenges. At the same time, the Prime Minister stressed that small, island Member States and those on the periphery of the European continent, such as our country, embrace a particular reality due to a number of challenges they face, including that of insularity, connectivity, water and energy security.Against this background, the Prime Minister stressed the need to continue to emphasise the need for a more flexible and proportionate framework during the discussions on the EU financial framework for post-2027, so that cohesion policy continues to translate into concrete and valuable results for all citizens. Also present at the meeting were Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism Ian Borg, Minister for European Funds and Implementation of the Electoral Programme Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi, Head of the Secretariat of the Prime Minister’s Office, Colonel Mark Mallia, Advisor to the Prime Minister on European Affairs, Leandro Borg and Permanent Secretary for European Funds, Jonathan Vassallo.Photo – (DOI – Daniel Scicluna)
