Malta today celebrates 50 years since becoming a Republic on 13 December 1974, when the country cut all ties with Britain. During a ceremony at the Republic Day monument, in Triq Diċembru 13 the Labour Party commemorated when Malta became a Republic under the guidance of Prime Minister Mintoff.
