Prime Minister Robert Abela announced the creation of a new Study Hub in Gozo, aimed at supporting young people’s skills and aspirations which will be located at the University of Malta’s Gozo campus.
During the opening of the 2026 Labour Party Congress in Gozo, themed “Malta Aqwa – ikteb il-kapitlu li jmiss” (“Malta Better – write the next chapter”), Dr Abela also unveiled other initiatives:
- A new fast‑ferry route connecting Sliema, Buġibba, and Gozo, set to launch soon after successful tests on the Sliema jetty.
- Installation of 150 bicycle racks across Gozo, in partnership with the voluntary organisation Rota, to encourage sustainable and alternative transport.
Dr Abela cited positive assessments from Morningstar DBRS, which awarded Malta three favourable ratings for its economy and public finances.
He highlighted Gozo’s strong economic progress, noting that its economy now exceeds €1 billion—triple what it was in 2013—and that the latest Budget includes €122 million allocated to the island. He described this as a significant investment for Gozitan residents and reaffirmed that Gozo remains a government priority.
Abela concluded by reaffirming his government’s commitment to deliver on citizens’ expectations despite ongoing global challenges, particularly instability in the Middle East and Arabian Gulf, which have impacted oil markets and EU fuel supplies.
