Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Public Works Chris Bonett has announced two new projects in the heart of Paola. These projects are part of a wider vision of regeneration and investment in this locality and will include the beautification of the main square as well as a new and modern lighting system for the Basilica of Christ the King.

Works already underway in the main square include a new monument to Grand Master Antoine de Paule, a commemorative plaque in the pavement commemorating the 400th anniversary of the founding of the town, and bronze maps symbolising the development of Paola over the years. In addition, existing fountains will be restored and new elements such as trees in planters and benches will be added, ensuring that the square remains a vibrant space for residents and visitors. Work on this project has already begun and is progressing at a rapid pace.

At the same time, the Department of Public Works will be issuing a tender for a new lighting system for the Basilica of Christ the King. The system will enhance the architecture of the facades and dome while improving visibility from various locations. The system will include individual lighting control with different options, including dimming and various scenes, which can be controlled via a tablet. This allows flexibility depending on the occasion, from daily use as well as for parties and special events. The lighting project is expected to take approximately 7 months to complete from the start of work, after the tender process is closed.

Minister Chris Bonett said that these projects do not come in isolation, but are a continuation of the extensive work that has been carried out over the past few years by various entities of the same Ministry. Among them are the Tony Bezzina Garden, which is already being enjoyed by residents, as well as the works currently underway on the Pawlu Boffa Garden and the Silvio Parnis Garden, together with various infrastructural works on new roads and pavements. Minister Bonett explained how, “These two projects together amount to a total investment of more than €1 million which together with the work currently underway in various areas of Paola, will continue to give this village, the people of Paola and all those who visit it the importance and dignity that it deserves.”

For his part, Paola Mayor Jason Silvio thanked the Ministry for Transport, Infrastructure and Public Works for the work being carried out in Paola. He explained that the square project will be beautify this popular area and continue to build on the projects underway throughout the village.
