A €4 million investment in the extension of the St Andrews distribution centre has significantly strengthened Malta’s electricity network, delivering increased capacity and resilience to meet future demand in the area.

Minister for Energy Miriam Dalli, Enemalta Executive Chairman Ing. Ryan Fava, and Pembroke mayor Kaylon Zammit visited the site to mark the completion of the works.

The project includes the installation of a new 30MVA power transformer, the extension of switchgear to connect with both 33kV and 11kV distribution networks, and upgrades to the substation’s control system to enable remote operation and 24/7 monitoring. Civil works were also carried out to support the development, with careful planning and safety measures implemented to ensure minimal environmental impact on the surrounding area.

During the visit, Minister Miriam Dalli stated that continued investment in Malta’s energy infrastructure is key to prepare the country for the future. “This project forms part of our long-term vision to modernise and strengthen the electricity distribution network across Malta and Gozo. Through Enemalta’s nine-year plan, we are investing in a number of new distribution centres, and we are upgrading existing infrastructure to ensure we can meet increasing demand while improving reliability and efficiency for consumers,” Minister Dalli stated.

Enemalta Executive Chairman Ryan Fava highlighted the technical significance of the project. “This investment has enhanced the flexibility and resilience of the network in the St Andrews and surrounding areas. By increasing transformer capacity and improving system monitoring, we are ensuring that the network is better equipped to handle current and future load demands,” Ing. Fava said.

Pembroke mayor Kaylon Zammit welcomed the completed works, noting the importance of reliable energy infrastructure for the locality’s continued growth.

The St Andrews distribution centre extension will play a key role in supporting Malta’s growing energy needs while maintaining high standards of safety, operational efficiency, and environmental responsibility.
