In Brussels, Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Rights Anton Refalo attended the AGRIFISH Council of Ministers meeting, which took place on 30 March 2026.

During the discussion on the energy transition in the fisheries sector, Malta stressed the need for a realistic, proportionate and gradual approach, with more flexibility and financial support, especially for small-scale fisheries. The importance of a level playing field was also underlined so that European fishermen are not disadvantaged compared to those from third countries.

Regarding the Vision for Agriculture and Food, Malta acknowledged the progress made in this first year of implementation, but stressed the need for greater flexibility and simplification in the future Common Agricultural Policy, particularly with regard to the accessibility of crisis compensation and risk management tools, in light of the current geopolitical challenges and market volatility.

In the area of trade, Malta called for regular assessments of the impact of trade agreements on European producers and highlighted the pressure currently being experienced by the pork sector due to increased production prices and a decrease in the price of imported products, and therefore called for adequate support for affected producers.

Minister Anton Refalo said that, “It is crucial that we continue to build a European policy that is flexible and realistic, that protects our producers and strengthens the resilience of the primary sectors.”

The Ministry will continue to work with the European Commission and other Member States to translate these priorities into concrete measures.
