Ready, Set, Play! programme launched at St Paul’s Bay Primary School

Minister for Education, Sports, Youth, Research and Innovation, Clifton Grima visited Maria Reġina College

The Minister for Education, Sports, Youth, Research and Innovation, Clifton Grima visited Maria Reġina College, Father Felic Sammut Primary School, St Paul’s Bay, where he officially launched the “Ready, Set, Play!” programme, an initiative that aims to continue to strengthen physical activity among children from an early age.

During the visit, the Minister emphasized that physical education in Maltese schools is already being given great importance and is an integral part of students’ daily routine, while the PE lesson remains the main foundation of children’s physical development.

The “Ready, Set, Play!” program was designed to complement this work, by providing more structured opportunities for children to move, develop fundamental movement skills and enjoy physical activity in an inclusive and fun way.

Through this program, students are participating in regular sessions that focus on essential skills such as agility, balance and coordination, while also strengthening their confidence and participation.

Minister Grima also pointed out that this initiative forms part of a broader vision that looks towards holistic education, where the physical and mental well-being of children is given the same importance as academic learning.

Furthermore, it was highlighted how the “Ready, Set, Play!” programme is linked to the Malta School Games, which provide an opportunity for students to continue developing in the sporting field as they grow, from a level of participation to a level of performance and excellence.

In this context, the Minister also referred to the official song of the Malta School Games, “Games that unite us”, performed by Glen Vella, which symbolizes the unity and energy of sport among children and young people.

Minister Grima said that “Through ‘Ready, Set, Play!’ we are investing directly in the well-being of our children. This programme not only strengthens physical activity in schools, but also helps children develop in a balanced way, build confidence and learn to love movement from an early age. Together with the Malta School Games, we are building a clear path from participation to excellence, and above all, we are building a healthier and more active generation.”

The Head of School, Victoria Spiteri, expressed her satisfaction with this initiative and stressed the importance of physical activity remaining an integral part of children’s educational experience, while pointing out that programmes such as “Ready, Set, Play!” continue to strengthen the work that is already being done daily at the school in favour of the physical, social and emotional development of students.

This initiative forms part of a national vision that places the well-being of children at the heart of educational policy, while continuing to promote a balance between academic learning and an active and healthy lifestyle.
