Civil Protection Malta received a report of a female climber requiring medical assistance in the vicinity of the Red Tower, Mellieħa.
Rescue teams from Fire Stations 1, 3, and 5 were immediately deployed and commenced operations in a challenging environment. Two CPD rescuers abseiled down to safely reach the casualty, where an initial assessment was carried out.
Given the severity of the situation, an Armed Forces of Malta helicopter was deployed to airlift the injured climber to hospital for further treatment.
The operation continued with specialised rope rescue techniques to safely assist the remaining five climbers, alongside the two CPD rescuers, back to a secure area.
The rescue was particularly complex and delicate due to extremely difficult access the site was only reachable on foot, requiring significant resources and coordination. Additionally, operations were conducted in complete darkness, further increasing the level of difficulty and risk.
