President Donald Trump has revoked a key scientific ruling that has underpinned U.S. federal climate policy for more than 15 years.
The move overturns the 2009 “endangerment finding,” a determination by the Environmental Protection Agency that greenhouse gases — including carbon dioxide and methane — pose a threat to public health and welfare. That finding has served as the legal foundation for federal regulations aimed at limiting planet-warming emissions, particularly from vehicles and power plants.
The White House is calling the decision the “largest deregulation in American history.” Officials say the reversal will lower compliance costs for automakers and reduce vehicle prices, estimating savings of roughly $2,400 per car.
