At the Għajnsielem Primary School, enhancement work was carried out at the entrance and the school facade, creating a more beautiful environment. The project was inaugurated by the Minister for the Environment and Energy, Miriam Dalli together with the Minister for Gozo and Planning, Clint Camilleri, Mayor Kevin Cauchi, members of the Għajnsielem Local Council, as well as students, school representatives, and officials from Ambjent Malta.

During the inauguration, students participated in various activities, including a reading session about the lives of Mary Meilak and Ġorġ Pisani, two Gozitan poets. Poetry readings were also held on benches designed in form of books.

Through this project, which was carried out in collaboration between the Ministry for Gozo and Planning, Environment Malta, and the Għajnsielem Local Council, the wall and concrete area that previously existed were removed and replaced with a public space that provides easier access for the community while also enhancing environmental value.

Minister Miriam Dalli said, “This year, we continued opening open spaces one after another in various localities, and today we are doing the same in Gozo, right next to the primary school. With this investment, we are showing that public spaces can be transformed in a tangible way to serve people better while also benefiting the environment. This project is part of a broader effort to reduce concrete and increase more green spaces that are accessible, functional, and adapted to the everyday life of our communities. Our goal is to bring nature closer to people, in urban areas and around schools, with spaces that make a real difference in the quality of the environment and the way people use it.”

Minister Clint Camilleri stated, “This project demonstrates the Government’s commitment to investing in quality public spaces in Gozo. The creation of green and accessible spaces, such as this public area near schools, adds value to the community and contributes to a more sustainable and better environment for our children and the local residents.”

The Director General of Ambjent Malta, Herman Galea, explained that through this project, the wall that separated the school building from the pavement was removed, and trees and shrubs were planted in its place.

The Mayor of Għajnsielem, Kevin Cauchi, stated, “We have inaugurated a space where there were a wall and a concrete yard, and today we have this beautiful garden open to the public and to parents waiting for their children. There are two benches dedicated to Mary Meilak and Ġorġ Pisani. Thanks to the support of the government and the work of the local council, we are inaugurating this project for the enjoyment of our residents.”

The design also includes landscaping that reduces urban impact, with benches and grass pavers, green screens, and vertical walls with vegetation that provide more privacy and a more natural appearance. The canopy roof further strengthens the ecological benefits of the project.
