A new community garden designed to provide a safe, accessible, and biodiverse space for families has been officially inaugurated in Għaxaq.
The garden, named Ġnien għall-Familja, was opened by Minister for the Environment, Energy and Public Cleanliness Miriam Dalli, together with the Project Green team and representatives of the Għaxaq Local Council, including Mayor Karl Boxall.
This investment covers an area in the heart of a housing area and introduces a variety of greenery, including new trees and shrubs on what was previously bare land, creating a quiet recreational space for the town’s 3,000 residents. The project integrates several sustainable features such as solar-powered lighting and a dedicated water cistern built specifically to support efficient and eco-friendly irrigation.
“When we speak about greener communities, we are ultimately speaking about the kind of daily environment we want people to live in. Spaces like this one in Għaxaq may seem modest in scale, but they make a meaningful difference to residents’ wellbeing, especially in dense urban areas. This space is being complemented by a larger area on which Project Green is currently working, and which is going to be turned into a park in the coming months. They reconnect people with nature, support biodiversity, and encourage a healthier rhythm of life. Our aim is to ensure that every locality, regardless of size, has access to inviting and sustainable open spaces. This garden reflects a shift towards long-term planning, where environmental, social, and practical considerations all come together to create places that genuinely serve the community,” said Minister Dalli.
Perit Katrina Grech Mallia emphasised that Project Green is giving families a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable garden in the heart of Għaxaq. “Our aim was to create an inclusive space where sustainability reflects the needs of the community. By integrating solar lighting and a dedicated cistern, we are ensuring that this garden can continue to thrive for years to come”, she said.
