Deputy Prime Minister Ian Borg in Qatar

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism Ian Borg held talks with key officials of the State of Qatar, including the Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani.

During a short visit to Doha, Dr Borg engaged in a series of high-level meetings aimed at strengthening Malta’s bilateral relations with the State of Qatar and advancing dialogue on key regional and global issues.

The meeting with the Prime Minister of Qatar focused on enhancing cooperation between the two countries, particularly in the areas of economic collaboration and tourism. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to expanding people-to-people exchanges and creating new opportunities that support mutual growth.

The Deputy Prime Minister also held a constructive meeting with the Minister of Energy Affairs of Qatar, Eng. Saad bin Sherida Al Kaabi. They discussed deepening energy cooperation, exploring new avenues for collaboration, and reinforcing shared priorities in sustainability and energy security. Malta and Qatar expressed their readiness to continue building a partnership that reflects the challenges and opportunities of the evolving global energy landscape.

In addition, the Deputy Prime Minister participated in the 2025 Doha Forum, where he was a speaker on a panel dedicated to migration. In his intervention, he underscored the importance of humane, sustainable and collaborative approaches to migration management. He highlighted the ongoing dynamics in the Middle East, noting that developments in the region continue to significantly influence global mobility and humanitarian considerations. Malta remains committed to working with international partners to uphold dignity, security and opportunity for all those affected by migration.

Dr Borg reaffirmed Malta’s dedication to deepening its engagement with Qatar and contributing constructively to regional and global dialogue. The visit marked another important step in strengthening Malta’s strategic partnerships and advancing shared objectives for stability and progress.
