Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Rights Anton Refalo together with Minister for Gozo and Planning Clint Camilleri announced that on Sunday, 16 November 2025, the ‘Alive: Fish and the Sea Around Us’ event will be held in Marsalforn, between 11:00am and 5:00pm.
This event is a feast for the whole family that celebrates maritime life, local fishing and our culture linked to the sea. The event is being organised by the Ministry for Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Rights in collaboration with the Ministry for Gozo and Planning, to offer a day of fun, learning and experiences related to the sea for Gozitan and Maltese families. ‘Ħajjin’ aims to encourage a greater appreciation of the sea and the sustainability of fishing, while highlighting how the sea is an essential part of our identity as a people.
The programme blends culture, education and entertainment for a unique experience that combines learning with entertainment. Throughout the day, visitors will enjoy live shows with local singers and musicians, activities for children including animation and a bouncy castle, as well as interactive games and educational exhibitions about fish and the sea around us. There will also be boat rides, crafts and folk groups displaying traditional works, as well as stands with local products.
The atmosphere will be decorated with a maritime theme to create an environment that reflects the beauty and heritage of our sea. Another important experience will be the culinary one: food made from local products and fresh fish from Maltese and Gozitan fishermen, offered to the public as part of the feast.
Minister Anton Refalo said, “This event is not only a feast for the whole family, but a clear message about how important it is to appreciate and protect our natural resources. The sea and local fishing have enormous value in our culture and economy, and through ‘Ħajjin’ we want to strengthen respect for these sectors. I thank all the entities and the community that are making this event possible.”
Minister Clint Camilleri stated, “The Ministry remains committed to continuing to support initiatives such as these, which not only strengthen the sense of community we have on this island but also the appreciation for everything that makes Gozo unique. In close collaboration with the Ministry for Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Rights, we are creating an experience that combines entertainment with learning and that raises more awareness about the sustainability of fishing and the importance of caring for the sea around us. In addition, these activities continue to attract more visitors to Gozo throughout the year.” ‘Alive: The Fish and the Sea Around Us’ is expected to be a successful activity that unites the community on a day that embraces maritime heritage, family and education.
