GWU announces an industrial dispute with HSBC Malta

The Professionals, Finance and Services Section of the General Workers’ Union (GWU) has declared an industrial dispute against HSBC Malta plc, as outlined in Clause 9 of the Collective Agreement between HSBC Bank Malta plc and the GWU for the period 2024-2026.
This action has been prompted by the excessive delay in scheduling a meeting to discuss the financial package intended to compensate employees for their past service to HSBC Malta plc. The GWU has expressed growing concerns regarding the continued delay in receiving the draft document that outlines the proposed terms of this compensation.
Section Secretary Riccarda Darmanin stated, “The exclusion of the GWU from this process is entirely unacceptable and must be addressed without further delay. The ongoing uncertainty and anxiety among employees, coupled with increasing speculation, is intolerable. If this exclusion continues, we will take all necessary measures to prevent the implementation of any agreement reached without our involvement and consent.”
Considering this ongoing lack of progress, the GWU has formally declared an industrial dispute.
However, the union is committed to participating in constructive discussions and urges the bank to engage in timely, transparent, and meaningful dialogue to resolve this matter in the best interest of all parties involved. A copy of this declaration is being sent to the Director General of DIER to document the progress of this dispute.
