National Physical Activity Strategy 2025–2030 launched

Minister for Health and Active Ageing Jo Etienne Abela

The National Health-Enhancing Physical Activity (HEPA) Strategy 2025–2030 has been launched. This Strategy establishes a national framework to promote physical activity at all stages of life, recognising its essential role in improving physical and mental health.

The strategy adopts a whole-of-government and whole-of-society approach, so that different sectors; such as health, education, transport, environment and urban planning work together to create environments that make physical activity a natural part of everyday life.

Minister for Health and Active Ageing Jo Etienne Abela said that this HEPA strategy is a crucial step in promoting a more active, healthy and sustainable society. The strategy places equity and inclusion at its core, so that every individual, regardless of their age, ability or background, can enjoy the benefits of physical activity.

“Through this strategy and also the strategy launched in recent weeks on non-communicable diseases, Malta reaffirms its commitment to encouraging more people to incorporate physical activity into their routine, improving public health and encouraging active communities that enhance the well-being of all,” concluded Dr Abela.

Minister for Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation Clifton Grima

Minister for Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation Clifton Grima said that this strategy continues to be strengthened through education and sport, with concrete initiatives such as daily physical education lessons in schools, the Let’s Move Malta and #BeActive programmes, as well as the free gym scheme for young people. He stressed that these measures are helping to make physical activity a natural part of the daily lives of Maltese children and families, while education remains a pillar in building a healthy, active and inclusive society.
