UEFA U21: Malta v Georgia

Malta v Georgia U21

Malta take on Georgia in the UEFA U21 Championship.

Malta Under-21 National Team Coach Davide Mazzotta has emphasised the team’s focus on growth and continued aim of developing an identity, heading into the next UEFA European U21 Championship Qualifier against Georgia.

Malta takes on Georgia in the third match of Group F tonight. The match will be held at the Centenary Stadium in Ta’ Qali, with kick-off at 7pm.

The team is coming off the back of a 2-0 defeat away to Northern Ireland, having suffered two first-half goals. They regrouped and recovered following the break, being more resilient in their defending, while also looking more confident in their attacking play.

Commenting on the match, Mazzotta remarked that while the result reflects a negative outcome, the coaching staff observed progress in several areas. “What pleased us most was the team spirit. That’s our starting point.”

Looking forward to tonight’s encounter, he is not simply targeting a reaction from the team but is looking for further signs that the team is moving in the direction the coaching staff has set.

“We’re clear on what our objectives are. If each one of us increases our effort, even by a small amount, everyone stands to benefit,” Mazzotta continued.

When asked what key threats Georgia possess, Mazzotta said that their strength is not in question, with the away side having had an unbeaten start to the qualifying campaign, with draws against Northern Ireland and Latvia.

“We know their playing style and the qualities of their individual players. That said, our focus is on getting our boys to concentrate on our strengths, and right now, we want to direct our energy and resources inward,” he stated.
