The steel structure that forms the flyover at Msida Creek is complete after the final, sixth section was installed early Sunday morning. This section of the structure is 18 metres long and weighs approximately 25.5 tonnes. All of the steel structures were designed and manufactured locally, in less than a year since work began on this major project.
Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Public Works Chris Bonett said that, “This is a project that is being carried out at a rapid pace, as the flyover structure is now in place, in less than a year since work began on it.”
He explained how in the coming weeks the new bridge connecting Msida with Pietà will be opened to vehicles while the flyover is expected to be opened to vehicles by the end of this year. “Both the new bridge and the flyover will give us access to create a new open space in the heart of Msida while we will build a canal that will serve to alleviate the flooding problem synonymous with this area,” concluded Minister Bonett.
Infrastructure Malta’s Chief Executive Officer, Steve Ellul, explained that work on this project is being carried out in such a way as to minimise inconvenience, both to residents and to those who pass through this area in their vehicles.
“Major works that require traffic diversion are being carried out on weekends or at night, with clear communication in advance to continue to ensure that the implementation of this project is carried out successfully,” stressed Steve Ellul.
