In all schools in Malta and Gozo, as every year, the School Sports Day will be held, during which thousands of students will come together in various activities with the participation of educators. This day is organized by SportMalta as an initiative through which schools have been given the opportunity to be part of the School Sports Day. This year the activity will be held on Wednesday, 15th October.

This is a successful activity every year, with the organisation of sporting activities on the same day, as will be the case this year.

Apart from being a day of sporting activity, this day also serves to promote the importance of engaging in physical activity at school towards a healthier lifestyle.

“Through SportMalta we are taking various initiatives to ensure that we encourage our children from a young age to participate in sport and physical activity throughout the year,” said the Minister for Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation, Clifton Grima, when launching the event today. He was speaking at the Cottonera Sports Complex where the launch took place during a conference attended by 40 schools that took part in last year’s edition.

These schools were today given sports equipment in recognition of their participation, thus further strengthening the level and quality of physical education in schools.

“We want society to be aware of the importance of physical activity and to participate more actively in sports and physical activities. SportMalta has several initiatives linked to the promotion of sports and physical activity, including this activity and also the #BeActive campaign and the European Week of Sport,” said Minister Grima.

The Ministry for Education is continuing to invest in school open spaces with an ongoing project to rehabilitate sports grounds, with the aim of improving the sports infrastructure in state schools both for recreational purposes and to improve the level of sports education. This work is being carried out continuously and against the backdrop of the national policy to address obesity among children and also to foster a sports culture in children.

In addition, in new schools and those being modernised, emphasis is being placed on the outdoor environment, to ensure that it is suitable for physical activity, an important component of the school curriculum. These measures are being taken in conjunction with other programmes and initiatives, including the increase in physical activity lessons in schools.

At the ceremony held this morning, Stella Maris College Secondary School was awarded the #BeActive School 2024 trophy as the school that showed the most commitment and dedication in organizing a sporting event in last year’s edition.

The application for schools to participate in the National Sports Day is open.
