Misraħ il-Karmelitani in Żurrieq will be transformed from a tarmac area into a new green open space by Project Green.
During a visit to the site by Minister Miriam Dalli, it was explained how the road will be transformed into a public space that everyone can enjoy.
“With this investment we will be giving back the residents of Żurrieq, another open space where they can meet and socialise together. Through this project, we are seeing that 2,200 residents will now have a space where the community can meet,” said Minister Dalli.
As part of the project, a reservoir will be created to collect rainwater from the road, which will be used for watering indigenous trees and shrubs. A new lighting system will also be installed, including solar lighting, as well as benches that together create a recreational space. A dedicated zone will be made for yoga and wellness sessions.
Also present for the visit were the Project Green team and Żurrieq Mayor Rita Grima.
Project Green’s Project Manager, Joseph Borda, explained that the agency will continue to provide more open spaces for residents to enjoy within a 10-minute walk from their homes or workplaces. “As with every other project, we ensure sustainable elements. This open space will include playground equipment for young children made from recyclable materials, as well as pathways made from mulch, an organic material that enriches the soil,” Borda added.
The Misraħ il-Karmelitani project in Żurrieq is among 16 projects announced by Project Green under the Community Greening Grant scheme.
