A significant milestone in the ongoing infrastructure works is set to take place
today, Sunday 14th September 2025, with the lifting and installation of the fifth
and largest span of the new bridge structure at Triq M.A. Vassalli.
The steel span, measuring 25 metres in length and 7.5 metres in width, weighs
an impressive 57,000kg, making it the heaviest and most complex of the six spans
planned for the project.
Due to its size and complexity, this lift operation requires extensive planning and
coordination. The span was fabricated by E&L Enterprises at their Hal Far facility
and delivered to site in multiple sections. These were carefully assembled at a
temporary staging area in Msida, chosen to mitigate space constraints and reduce
disruption to traffic during assembly.
Today’s operation will see the fully assembled span lifted from its current position
and transported a short distance to be installed in its final location. The lift will
involve the deployment of multiple cranes, with each major lifting step carried out
by two cranes operating in tandem, a method necessary to ensure stability and
safety throughout the process.
Given the technical complexity of the operation and the size of the machinery
involved, Triq M.A. Vassalli will be fully closed to traffic for the duration of the lift.
Motorists are advised to follow diversion signs and use alternative routes.
This lift marks a pivotal stage in the bridge construction, bringing the project
closer to completion and improved connectivity for road users in the area.
