2025 edition of the European Week of Sport is launched

Sports Minister Clifton Grima at launch of European Week of Sport

The 10th Edition of the European Week of Sport – #BeActive European Week of Sport will take place between 23rd and 30th September, when like other years, through SportMalta, our country will participate in this week of activities spread across 40 countries. This week of sport is held with the aim of promoting a more active lifestyle to millions of people both in Europe and in countries beyond Europe.

One of the main objectives of this week is to raise awareness about the lifestyle we are living, especially when statistics show that a substantial number of people across Europe, including in our country, do not live a balanced life in which they incorporate the important element of sport and physical exercise.

During the launch of this week of sports activities held at the Cottonera Sports Complex, Minister for Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation Clifton Grima spoke about the importance of physical activity and sport in everyday life to improve the quality of our lives and that this lifestyle starts from an early age. “Through SportMalta and the #BeActive campaign, the Ministry is promoting sport and physical activity throughout the year so that we have a society that is aware of the importance of physical activity and that participates more actively in sports and physical activities,” said Minister Grima.

This year’s European Week of Sport will focus on the themes of inclusion, well-being, and belonging. “This week we are also continuing to show the importance that sport not only brings unity, but also the importance of inclusion in the world of Sport,” said Minister Grima.

During this morning’s launch, details of the activities that will take place were given, with the participation of 30 Local Councils, students from Schools, more than 40 sports associations and organizations and workers from workplaces. The National #BeActive Night event will take place on September 27th, while as in previous years, a Sports Day will also be held in schools.

SportMalta Chairman Matthew Pisani highlighted the campaign’s message about how important physical activity is for everyone, while hoping that this initiative will inspire people to live a more active life.

The Ambassadors for this sporting event will be Judoka Katryna Esposito, shooter Gianluca Chetcuti, Frame Football athlete Maja Ruzicic and swimmer Sasha Gatt.

Later Minister Clifton Grima visited the sports activities that were taking place at the Complex, organised as part of the annual Summer on the Move campaign. During the summer, around 4,000 people attend this programme, led by qualified coaches in various sports disciplines. Minister Clifton Grima explained that the aim of this programme is to encourage as many children, young people and adults as possible to take part in sports activities during the summer months, when everyone tends to have more free time.

Through this programme, SportMalta is continuing to drive a more active and participatory Maltese society in sport, which, in addition, reaches higher levels in the world of competitive sport and enjoys the health benefits associated with sport.
