The solar farm at the Lapsi Reverse Osmosis Plant, with 888 PV panels, is now successfully connected to the electricity grid.
This was announced by Minister for the Environment, Energy and Public Cleanliness Miriam Dalli who visited the site together with Water Services Corporation (WSC) CEO Karl Cilia, where it was also explained that this project is part of WSC’s ongoing Green Bonds initiatives, aimed at enhancing Malta’s renewable infrastructure while reducing the corporation’s carbon footprint.
With an investment of €600,000 financed by green bonds, this solar power installation covers a roof area of 3,300m² and includes 888 photovoltaic panels (PVs), each with a capacity of 580 Wp. The system, with a total capacity of 515 kWp, is set to generate approximately 820,000 kWh of clean energy annually. This output is enough to power around 190 households per year, significantly reducing the reliance on fossil fuels and contributing to the ongoing transformation of WSC’s operations into a more sustainable and energy-efficient future.
“With projects like this, we are not only investing in cleaner energy, but also in Malta’s future. Through the Green Bonds initiative, we are ensuring that public investment directly supports sustainable growth, energy independence, and the reduction of harmful emissions, creating a legacy for generations to come,” states Minister Miriam Dalli.
Karl Cilia, CEO of the Water Services Corporation stated, “This is the completion of yet another solar power initiative at Lapsi. This project exemplifies WSC’s ongoing commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility. We are proud that WSC is leading the charge in Malta, pioneering large-scale, innovative green projects that not only contribute to the nation’s renewable energy goals but also drive the future of sustainable development across the industry.”
This solar installation also aligns with WSC’s broader sustainability goals, which include the continued investment in renewable energy sources.
As part of its ongoing commitment to sustainable investment, the Water Services Corporation is using proceeds from Malta’s first Green Bonds, which were introduced two years ago, to fund such projects. The Green Bonds provide an opportunity for investors to support environmentally friendly initiatives like the Lapsi solar power system, contributing to Malta’s ambitious environmental targets.
