Sliema Wanderers begam their YoHealth Premier League campaign with a narrow 2-1 win over newly promoted Zabbar.
Two goals in the first half hour saw Sliema Wanderers grab three points in their first game of the new season.
A defensive mix-up saw Zabbar’s Mayron head past his own keeper to put Sliema in front with fifteen minutes on the clock. Thiaguinho doubled Wanderers lead on the half hour before Haroun Tchaouna’s header gave Zabbar hope. Despite going close later in the game they could not find a second goal and the points went to Sliema.
Valletta, back in the top tier, held Birkirkara to a goal-less draw in the opening game of the new season. A nervy season opener produced few scoring chances, the best falling to Valletta’s new signing Shaft Brewer Jnr who hit the post.
