Prime Minister Robert Abela will be appointing Dr Helena Dalli as acting President

Helena Dalli, appointed Acting President of Malta

In accordance with article 49 of the Constitution of Malta, Prime Minister Robert Abela will be appointing Dr Helena Dalli as Acting President of the Republic of Malta when the President of Malta, H.E. Dr Myriam Spiteri Debono is, among others, absent from Malta.

This is being done in terms of the same article mentioned and in consultation with the Leader of the Opposition.

Dr Helena Dalli was elected to the Maltese Parliament since 1996 and in every legislature, until the one that began in 2017. Among others, she was Minister for Industrial Relations, for European Affairs, for Equality and Civil Rights where from 2013 onwards she was a key catalyst who pushed through numerous reforms and the introduction of a number of civil rights that left a positive impact on society including minority groups.

In 2019 she was appointed as the first European Commissioner for Equality where she was instrumental in designing European strategies and laws to move the European Union closer to a Union of Equality. Dr Dalli was for many years a lecturer at the University of Malta teaching Sociology of Law. She was the first Maltese woman to be appointed to the European Commission and in 2023, Helena Dalli was awarded the National Order of Merit.
