Minister for Home Affairs, Security and Employment Byron Camilleri, held a meeting with Dr László Kövér, Speaker of the Hungarian National Assembly, during his official visit to Malta.

The discussion covered a range of topics, including irregular migration, parliamentary systems, and other matters of mutual interest.

Minister Camilleri provided an overview of Malta’s recent achievements in the management of irregular migration. He explained that Malta implements a just system that provides assistance to those in need whilst being strong with those abusing the system. He explained how targeted efforts have led to a consistent and measurable improvement in this area.

“In recent years, Malta has made significant progress in managing irregular migration. We have strengthened the resources of the competent national entities, established a dedicated Returns Unit within the Ministry, and intensified our engagement with key third countries, both of transit and of origin,” stated Minister Camilleri.

These efforts have yielded a 93% decrease in the number of irregular arrivals last year compared to 5 years before, whilst the rate of return increased to 83.2% in 2023 and 68% in 2024 compared to arrivals in the same period.
