Parliamentary Secretary for Fisheries, Aquaculture and Animal Rights Alicia Bugeja Said attended the Annual General Meeting of the Active Fishermen’s Association, where an extensive report on a year of work in favour of members and the fishing sector in Malta and Gozo was discussed and approved.

She praised the work carried out by the Association during the past year through various initiatives that gave a boost to the fishing community, especially the young ones, who for many years felt without a voice. The Parliamentary Secretary highlighted the Government’s commitment to continue listening and working with operators in the sector in order to address the challenges they face.

“The Active Fishermen’s Association is giving a new voice to our fishermen. Today we have a structured and serious forum that is conveying the thoughts and concerns of a community that is important to our identity and economy. As a Government, we will continue to work with you to find solutions with a practical sense and with respect for your work,” stressed the parliamentary secretary.

During the meeting, the annual report was presented, explaining the work carried out, including meetings with key institutions, initiatives for direct fish sales in the markets, and the ongoing work on stronger representation both at national and European level.

Secretary of the Association, Jason Grixti, spoke about the need for the fisherman’s voice to continue to be heard in a structured manner, and stressed the importance of unity as a means of collective strength. He also said that the Association will continue to strive to protect the dignity and livelihood of fishermen, while promoting innovation and sustainable development in the sector. “The Active Fishermen Association will continue to commit itself to a stronger and fairer future for fishing in our country, by working closely with the authorities and its members.”
