The incinerator at Marsa has received prestigious international certification for its rigorous health and safety standards, underscoring WasteServ’s dedication to creating a safe working environment.

Incinerators present a challenging working environment. However, thanks to a robust health and safety culture developed over the years, WasteServ succeeded in obtaining ISO45001 Certification, the world’s international standard for health and safety.

A WasteServ spokesperson said: “This certification highlights our relentless pursuit of excellence in health and safety. This achievement not only protects our workforce but also reinforces our responsibility to our surrounding community.”

The thorough certification and audit process delved into key elements such as leadership commitment, worker participation, hazard identification and risk assessment, legal and regulatory compliance, emergency planning, incident investigation and continual improvement.

The Marsa incinerator is the second WasteServ facility to obtain this prestigious recognition. The Gozo plant is already certified and WasteServ is now expecting to obtain the same rigorous standards for its Magħtab facility shortly.

The organisation’s commitment to health and safety also caught the attention of international independent insurance risk assessors, which confirmed that WasteServ is well-resourced with qualified personnel stationed at each site.

This robust health and safety function operated under a management system that aligns with the requirements of ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015 and ISO 45001:2018, ensuring health and safety performance is not only monitored, but continuously improving.

WasteServ’s commitment is further demonstrated through the significant investment in health and safety measures. Over the past five years, the organisation has tripled its Health Department’s personnel, with 25 highly qualified officials today forming part of the team, in addition to health and safety leaders at each site.

In addition, WasteServ allocated some €2 million in capital to improve safety initiatives, further underscoring its proactive stance to safeguard its workforce and the community it serves.
