Malta strengthens its position in the aviation sector

Transport Minister Chris Bonett at aviation conference

Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Public Works Chris Bonett addressed the fourth edition of the annual aviation conference organised by Deloitte, this year with the theme ‘Gaining from the boom: Making the most of a thriving market’. This conference, which brought together a number of local and international stakeholders, took place against a backdrop of unprecedented growth in the aviation sector in our country.

Minister Bonett explained, “Malta has established itself as a strategic aviation hub, offering a competitive and business-friendly environment for operators around the world. Our commitment to innovation, safety and sustainability ensures continued growth and investment in this crucial sector.” He explained how the government considers the aviation sector to be one of the country’s economic pillars and how this industry is a key element in the government’s vision. “Recent investments in the aviation sector are continuing to help create more quality jobs for the benefit of families in our country,” concluded Minister Bonett.

The aircraft registry in Malta continues to grow at a steady rate with an increasing number of commercial and private aircraft choosing Maltese registration due to the sound regulatory framework and attractive fiscal incentives. This has led to the Maltese registry now exceeding 900 aircraft, double the number five years ago. The fact that Malta adheres to the highest international safety and operational standards has positioned our country as the preferred jurisdiction for a number of airlines, aircraft leasing companies and private owners.

Malta has seen major advances including improvements to Malta International Airport, further improvements to air traffic management systems, and the expansion of maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facilities. These initiatives strengthen the aviation ecosystem in Malta and attract more foreign direct investment.

During the conference, various themes were discussed while a number of experts shared their opinions with those present on a number of themes with the aim of our country continuing to achieve success after success in this sector.
