Protests continue across Turkey over detention of Opposition figures

Protests across Turkey over the detention of Istanbul’s mayor have swelled into the thousands over the detention of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, a popular opposition figure and potential presidential contender against President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, was detained on Wednesday on terrorism and corruption charges.

As protests entered their sixth day, Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has blamed opposition political parties for provoking a “movement of violence” and described the protests as “street terrorism”.

The Turkish government said 1,133 people had been arrested since the protests started.
