The Opera Nova Project has opened applications for its Summer Academy – a series of
short courses held this summer where operatic hopefuls of all ages in Malta can train
with some of the world’s leading opera professionals.
Set to take place from 28 June to 6 July, the intensive programme offers advanced adult
participants the chance to refine their craft, perform in Malta’s most prestigious venues
and learn from internationally acclaimed artists.
Headlining the Summer Academy faculty is renowned tenor Joseph Calleja, alongside
the Chair of Vocal Performance at the Royal College of Music London, Prof Janis Kelly,
and celebrated vocal coach, Prof James Pearson. The daily sessions will be open to the
public and will culminate in a final recital on 6 July on stage at Teatru Manoel.
“This masterclass week will offer a transformative experience, blending
inspirational bel canto technique and grounding and empowering tools,” says Prof Janis
Kelly. “It aims to equip the performers with the elements necessary to turn them into
leading singers of the future, in the beautiful and dynamic setting of Malta.”
The Opera Nova Project will also host its first Summer Intermediate Academy from 2-6
July for intermediate students. Open to aspiring singers from 16 to 20 years of age, the
course will delve into vocal technique, interpretation, history and style, under the
expert guidance of soprano Claire Debono, director and acting coach Karl Cassar and
music educator Gisele Grima. The daily coaching sessions will culminate in an inspiring
performance at a recital on 6 July.
Meanwhile, younger students aged 10 to 16 can also explore the world of opera at the
Summer Junior Academy. The programme, held from 27 June to 1 July, offers fun and
top-level training in singing, acting, movement and operatic history, serving as an
invaluable foundation both for those new to this art form and those who already have
some operatic experience. With top tutors including soprano and composer Analise
Mifsud, director and acting coach Karl Cassar and music educator Gisele Grima, the
Summer Junior Academy will also have a celebratory student performance on the final
day.

inspiration and an introduction to the local and international operatic community.”
With limited places available, applications are now open to join the Opera Nova Project
Summer Academy, by audition only. Passive participants (such as parents/guardians) are
