The Malta Football Association (MFA) launched a calendar of events that will be held during the year to celebrate the Association’s 125th anniversary.
The launch, held at Centenary Hall, was attended by MFA President Bjorn Vassallo and other MFA Officials and Executive Board Members, former Association Officials and other distinguished guests.
Introducing the event, President Vassallo remarked: “It is difficult to describe 125 years in a few words. It is a long story where the mission of football was at the heart of the MFA’s work ever since its foundation.”
He highlighted the Association’s passion towards the game and the numerous developments made over the years, noting its transformation into a dynamic and modern Association.
“To mark and celebrate this anniversary we are presenting a number of events that interest all of our members, yet apart from that, through three sub-committees, we are also working so that the celebrations are distributed accordingly and involve the participation and involvement of everyone,” President Vassallo continued.
“Football is good for the country. We hope the MFA will continue to do good for Malta,” he said, before expressing gratitude to the Association’s past and present members and staff.
The themes chosen for the anniversary are social responsibility and inclusion, with the Association utilising football to continue fostering unity.
The events announced include the 2025 MFA Awards, visits to local schools by National Team players, the opening of the National Football Centre, and a special competition called the MFA 125 Years Jubilee Cup to mark the anniversary, among many other initiatives. A special 125 Anniversary kit that will be worn for the home match against Lithuania on 7th June was announced, together with a publication and a special logo to commemorate the milestone year.
Former Maltese internationals Michael Mifsud, Brian Said and Dorianne Theuma have been chosen by the MFA to serve as ambassadors for the celebratory year. The trio highlighted a number of key memories from their distinguished playing careers, together with the growth that the National Teams have experienced over the years.
